Achievements

The Group is committed to responsible use of water resources and works to refine its sustainable water consumption and management practices by increasing the share of recycled water supply, reducing water withdrawal, and ensuring high-quality treatment of effluents.

Water consumption

In 2020, the Group’s total water withdrawal was almost flat compared to 2019 Water is mainly used for production needs and also for drinking, technical and general purposes.

PROJECTS AND RESULTS

Project

In 2018, MMK completed an upgrade of its recycled water supply system, commissioning a separation dam with an expanded cooling reservoir and a discharge facility.

Result

This project was one of the Company’s most important initiatives to protect the surface waters of the Magnitogorsk reservoir and the Ural River, allowing it to fully transition to a closed water disposal/supply system and significantly reduce industrial wastewater discharges.

Project

In 2020, a drainage system was built to transport the open pit's waste water to Sludge Pond No. 2 and discharge pumps were installed, allowing the water to be reused.

Result

This measure also resulted in a reduction in the total mass of pollutant discharges to water bodies in 2020 (by almost 5.2% compared to the previous year's value of 26,381 tons). By 2025, the Company aims to achieve a 17% reduction in pollutant discharges to water bodies compared to the baseline year of 2019.
