MMK representatives spoke at metallurgical summit in Moscow

Representatives of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) took part in the 21st metallurgical summit “Russian Steel: Growth Strategy,” organised by Eurasian Metals magazine with support from the Russian Steel Association. MMK's Director for Strategy and Development Sergey Nenashev and Acting Director for Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Andrey Cheryapkin presented at the event’s plenary sessions.

MMK remains firmly committed to the principes of sustainable development and carefully balances its business interests with care for the environment. In its new import substitution projects, the Company focuses on the use of the best available technologies, which enable it to significantly reduce the man-made impact on the environment.

According to Sergey Nenashev, MMK is currently implementing three major import substitution projects in its machine-building division. These include launching the production of forged rolls, machine-building products and cast rolls. "The total amount of financing for these projects exceeds RUB 31 billion. After the launch of the new shops, the production volumes of the machine-building division will increase by a factor of more than 1.5 and reach up to 132.2 thousand tonnes in 2026. The implementation of these projects will contribute to achieving the goals of import substitution and providing consumers with Russian-made products," Mr Nenashev said.

In turn, Andrey Cheryapkin spoke about MMK’s efforts to improve the environmental friendliness of its production processes. Since 2015, the Company has been carrying out the Clean City strategic initiative, which aims to improve the air quality in Magnitogorsk fourfold by 2026. "We have already achieved impressive results as of 2023: the concentration of benz(a)pyrene in the atmosphere has been reduced by a factor of 2.7, manganese – by a factor of 3.9, and dust – by a factor of 1.8. MMK devotes significant attention to developing the atmospheric air monitoring system in Magnitogorsk, with the data published online on the Company's website for anyone to view. In addition, last year the Company started piloting Russia's first automated system for calculating greenhouse gas emissions, which can calculate the carbon footprint of its production processes, along with a number of other parameters, on a monthly basis," Mr Cheryapkin said.

MMK's most ambitious environmental protection project to date is the construction of its new coke battery complex No. 12, which will be equipped with 28 aspiration systems, as well as desulphurisation and denitrification units and a closed-loop water supply system. With the launch of the new complex and the decommissioning of outdated batteries, atmospheric emissions will be reduced by 11,350 tonnes per year.

The metallurgical summit hosted by Eurasian Metals magazine, which took place on 28-29 May 2024, is one of the industry's leading discussion platforms. The event has been traditionally attended by representatives of leading steel companies, including, in addition to MMK, EVRAZ, Metalloinvest, Mechel, Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK), Severstal, United Metallurgical Company (OMK), Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK), Industrial Metallurgical Holding (IMH) and others.
