MRK Develops New Import Substitution Products

Specialists from Mekhanoremontny Kompleks LLC (MRK, part of MMK Group) have designed and manufactured a line of import substitution equipment for leading metallurgy companies in Russia.

Together with the I.P. Bardin Central Research Institute of Iron and Steel Industry, the Company has manufactured casting moulds for continuous casting machines (CCM), the most important and complex element of the equipment. One of the customers of MRK’s new product is Nizhny Tagil Iron and Steel Plant (JSC Evraz NTMK), a leading steel manufacturer in Russia. MRK also designed and produced CCM – section 1 units for Evraz NTMK that are located directly under the casting moulds and feature a modern, centralised lubrication system as well as additional roller cooling.

MRK has also independently developed technical documentation, and has manufactured and delivered several types of sintering trolleys to one of Russia’s leading ore mining enterprises EVRAZ Kachkanar Mining and Processing Plant (Evraz KGOK AO); and roller conveyors for Danieli continuous casting machines for PJSC Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant.

In 2022, MRK supplied custom-designed oxygen tuyere tips, a strategically important piece of metallurgical equipment required for the use of oxygen converter technologies, to one of the largest metallurgy companies in Russia.

Thanks to a team of highly qualified in-house technology, design and manufacturing personnel, the use of new modern technologies and computer modelling, a line of cold-hardening mixtures, and modern CNC welding, surfacing and machine-tool facilities, MRK is able to create complex, high-tech units, including basic cast metal constructions with complex configurations.

Oleg Shiryaev, Director of MRK, commented: “MRK has already mastered the production of many types of equipment for PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. This equipment, which is required for continuous casting machines, as well as the parts and components needed in flat rolling shops, were previously purchased from abroad. Our company is developing, and thanks to the introduction of new technologies and the development of our own design and technological bases, we have made the transition from providing repair services to fulfilling turnkey orders – from the design stage to the finished product. This is a relatively new approach for us – and, as it turns out, one that is in high demand – that enables us to actively produce import-substitution products for other Russian metallurgy companies.”
