MMK invested over RUB 19 billion in the environment in 2023

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) allocated more than RUB 19 billion for environmental activities last year, including RUB 15 billion for the construction of permanent environmental facilities.

The Company carried out 46 projects during the year to mitigate or prevent a negative impact on the environment, with another 16 projects currently under way. As a result, the Company has made significant progress on its environmental activities:

· Specific emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere decreased by 9.3% over the year (from 14.55 kg per tonne of steel to 13.2 kg per tonne of steel).

· Specific discharges of pollutants into bodies of water decreased by 19% (from 1.63 kg per tonne of steel to 1.32 kg per tonne of steel).

· Some 1.7 million tonnes of production waste were used as secondary raw material in sinter mix.

· Some 9.6 million tonnes of flowing and waste slag were processed at specialised plants.

One of MMK’s main environmental projects is the large-scale modernisation of its coke production facility. This project includes the construction of a new coke plant (No. 12) as well as the reconstruction of the biochemical plant and the chemical product recovery and processing shop. Once the new coke plant is put into operation, the Company will be able to decommission outdated capacities and reduce gross emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 11.35 thousand tonnes per year.

MMK has a long-term environmental programme in place that covers all its production processes and focuses on the use of the best available technologies. The programme has enabled the Company to reduce its environmental impact and to ensure that all of its production processes are safe for the environment.
