MMK wins four medals at Archimedes innovation forum

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) won two gold and two silver medals at the 27th Archimedes Moscow International Salon of Inventions and Innovation Technologies. This year, the Company presented three patented inventions and one digital product that received high scores from the expert committee and the international jury at the prestigious forum.

MMK received awards for developments in the production of rolled products from cold-resistant steel. Notably, the Company was awarded a gold medal for its method of producing flat products with a thickness of 8–50 mm from cold-resistant, high-strength steel with a hardness of 425–475 HBW. These flat products are intended for the manufacture of equipment and vehicles for the road construction, agricultural and mining sectors. Another method, which was awarded a silver medal, is used to produce rolled stock from cold-resistant steel that has a yield strength of 500-900 MPa and cold resistance down to minus 70°C. This kind of rolled stock is used for the steelmaking and oil and gas industries, construction, transport and heavy engineering, bridge construction, and the production of hoisting and load-carrying equipment for operating in the extreme conditions of the Far North.

In addition, MMK received a gold medal for a production technology used to make cold-rolled, continuously annealed flat products from ultra-low-carbon interstitial-free (IF) steel. With their high level of stampability, these kinds of flat products can be used in the manufacture of stamped products with especially complex shapes.

MMK also received a silver medal for a proprietary software development for calculating the parameters for cooling sheets during the quenching process. The software helps develop recommendations for cooling metal in a press quenching machine to ensure a range of mechanical properties and flatness during heat treatment for various grades of steel.

The 27th Archimedes Moscow International Salon of Inventions and Innovation Technologies took place from 19 to 21 March in the Exhibition Hall of the Amber Plaza Business Centre in Moscow. The event was held with the support of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent), the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA), the Archimedes International Innovation Club and others. Inventors from dozens of regions across Russia and a large number of foreign countries presented hundreds of projects in various fields of science and technology. MMK, a regular participant of the Archimedes Salon, was also awarded a certificate of honour and gratitude for its role in organising and helping to carry out the event.
