MMK Discusses Sustainability Practices at MINEX Forum

The MINEX Russia Forum, one of the oldest and largest events in the geological, mining and metallurgical industries, began in Moscow on 5 October. Yaroslava Vrubel, Head of ESG at PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), spoke at a forum session entitled “Sustainability of mining and metallurgical companies: meanings, priorities and drivers,” where she discussed with other participants the sustainability strategies of mining, metallurgical and technology companies.

The priorities and focuses of MMK’s social programmes are linked to the plant’s close integration with the city of Magnitogorsk. Therefore, the Company equally support both its employees and the rest of the city, being strongly committed to providing good working conditions and opportunities for professional development. MMK also guarantees social support and medical care, which is particularly important in the current conditions, and is active at the city level, implementing social and charitable programmes and supporting those in need.

“The instability and uncertainty of the current situation has its own implications. However, the environmental risks remain the same, and the importance of social responsibility for business is only growing. Even in the difficult economic situation, MMK continues to implement measures to improve environmental and industrial safety, as well as numerous social projects. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the Company’s relationship and cooperation with the city are as beneficial as possible for everyone,” Ms Vrubel said.

In her presentation, MMK’s head of sustainability also noted the progression and relevance of sustainable development in Russia. She said that much has been done in terms of carbon regulation, a low-emission socio-economic development strategy was adopted, a target for the reduction of greenhouse gases at the state level was approved, and a law that establishes a system of accountability and regulation for climate-related projects was passed. In this respect, MMK’s ESG projects go beyond the requirements stipulated by current legislation and regulations and are aimed at the benefit of society, Ms Vrubel emphasised.

The discussion, moderated by Svetlana Gerasimova, Head of the Sustainable Development Strategies and Practices Project Office, brought together experts from companies including Polyus, Severstal, Petropavlovsk PLC, EVRAZ, Norilsk Nickel, VEB.RF, SBER, Moscow Exchange and CMT Consulting. Participants discussed drivers and priorities in the sustainable development of Russian companies, as well as environmental, social and corporate aspects of the country's mining and metallurgical sector.

The MINEX Russia Forum was founded in 2005 and is the leading industry platform for the geological, mining and metallurgical sectors in Russia and the Eurasian Economic Community. This year, it brought together over 600 participants to discuss key trends, projects and technologies in the industry.
