MMK Boosts Import Substitution

Magnitogorsk Rolling Mill Plant (MZPV, part of MMK Group) has commissioned its third centrifugal machine for casting rolls, which will enable Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works to fully meet the needs of Russian steel producers for this crucial element of rolling mills.

Total investment in the construction of the new industrial facility amounted to nearly RUB 1.5 billion.

The machine, using new materials in the production process, will be capable of producing rolls up to 1500 mm in diameter and 3500 mm in length, thus covering the entire product range of work rolls for the roughing sections of all mills in Russia.

"Previously Russia had to import rolls like that," stresses Evgeny Skripkin, head of production at MZPV. "The production capacity of the new machine is high enough to satisfy the needs of all Russian rolling mills, including the sites of industrial giants - MMK, Novolipetsk Steel and Severstal. This is about two thousand rolls a year, which MZPV will start supplying in the near future."

"Production of import-substituting products has recently become a priority for many enterprises, but our company has been implementing this strategy for a long time," said Pavel Shilyaev, MMK CEO. "The investment programme of Magnitogorsk Rolling Mill Plant has been outlined until 2030, and it continues to focus on import substitution: in particular, it involves constructing a new industrial complex, which will enable us to master production of new products - backup rolls for hot-rolling mills."
