MMK Group continues construction of major import-substituting production facility
Mekhanoremontny Kompleks LLC (MRK, part of MMK Group), with the support of the Industrial Development Fund, continues to implement a significant investment project for the construction of a foundry and forging shop. Investment in the project will exceed RUB 14 billion. The new shop will have a production capacity of around 24 thousand tonnes per year and will create at least 770 jobs. The project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The facility, which manufactures import-substituting engineering products for the Russian and CIS markets, is being built as part of MRK’s comprehensive development programme. The foundry and forging shop will be a state-of-the-art full-cycle production facility focused on the production of forged work rolls for cold-rolling mills, forged support rolls for cold- and hot-rolling mills, and oversized forgings with an ingot weight of up to 120 tonnes. The shop will meet 100% of the plant’s needs for forged work rolls for its cold-rolling mills and forged support rolls for its cold- and hot-rolling mills, with the exception of rolls for the mill 5000. The new facility will also supply products to other Russian iron and steel companies, thus reducing the proportion of forged rolls that are imported from 80% to 30%.
The Bardin Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy (TsNIIchermet) is operating as the general designer of the foundry and forging shop, and the general contractor is JSC Prokatmontazh. At present, construction of the retaining walls and preparatory works for construction sites covering an area of 60,000 square metres, including earthmoving operations and the removal of the foundations of old workshops falling within the construction zone, are being completed. The foundations for the columns in the building that will house the thermomechanical department are being poured. A temporary power supply has been connected to the construction site, and floodlight towers have been installed to support round-the-clock work. Plans call for the installation of 74 pieces of process equipment in the shop.
MRK is one of the leading machine-building enterprises in the Southern Urals and one of the largest manufacturers of process equipment for the mining and metals industries in Russia. MRK ensures the continuity of MMK’s metallurgical production and holds a strong position in the country’s machine-building market, supplying equipment and spare parts to companies operating in Russia’s ferrous metallurgy industry.
