MMK's industrial tourism projects recognised at nationwide Russian competition
The company received two awards: first place for the best children's route, and second place for the best route with a still-active production site. In total, 476 such projects from 50 Russian regions were entered into the All-Russian Tourism Award “Route of the Year” competition.
The industrial tourism development project was launched at MMK last October, and all were given the opportunity to visit the industrial site of the plant. The enterprise was previously open for guests, but children's excursions were generally only offered in a careers guidance capacity. Among adult guests were predominantly only those who were associated with metallurgical production and who were visiting MMK for industry purposes.
As part of the Steel Route project, the company developed and launched several excursions around the enterprise at once: ‘Taming the Fire’, ‘Steel Evolution’, ‘Dad’s Work’ and ‘Visiting Metallurgists’. Over 12 months, the plant was visited by more than ten thousand people. Guests of the enterprise can see the scale of production with their own eyes, and learn about the history of the company and its current achievements. The participants of the tour are even shown the largest blast furnace shop in Russia and the unique Mill 5000 complex - one of the most powerful mills not only in Russia, but also in the world.
Magnitogorsk is included in the official cluster of industrial tourism sites under the federal program of Rostourism from 2019 to 2025. The routes around the MMK industrial site have been designed with safety, education and entertainment in mind.
The Russian Tourism “Route of the Year” award has been awarded annually since 2014. “The award fulfils one important need - it enables tourism market professionals to meet on the same platform and present their projects, to see the work of their colleagues from all over Russia, to get to know each other and to create joint projects. All this contributes to the development of the domestic tourism market as a whole,” said Gennady Shatalov, founder of the award.
