Shlakservis prepares for serial production of new products as part of import substitution programme

Granulated slag-forming mixtures are used for casting steel onto continuous casting machines. Since 1992, Shlakservis has been engaged in such production, which is among technology registered with the Russian Patent and Trademark Agency. Last year, as part of the import substitution programme, Shlakservis specialists, along with foundry laboratories at the Magnitogorsk State University and St Petersburg Polytechnic University, developed THERMOISOLIT, a unique granulated slag-forming mixture formula. The mixture has successfully passed MMK tests on continuous casting machines with vertical pitch angles, and serial production is planned following the conclusion of testing. Other metals and mining companies are interested in the new product, among them, PJSC Severstal is testing the new granulated slag-forming mixture.

Globally, granular slag-forming mixtures are widely used in the continuous casting of steel. Unlike powder mixtures, they do not stratify during storage and transportation, have higher thermal insulation properties, flow well over liquid metal mirrors and produce much less dust and other harmful substances. Granulated slag-forming mixtures make it possible to pour electrotechnical, carbonaceous (as well as low-carbon) and alloyed (as well as low-alloy) grades of steel. Additionally, the stability of the casting technology and the high quality of blanks surfaces are ensured. The granulated slag-forming mixtures produced by Shlakservis are used, not only in MMK’s steelmaking production, but are also supplied to other enterprises in the Russian metals and mining industry. Shlakservis products are not inferior in quality to imported equivalents and are much more competitively priced.

Shlakservis was established in April 2005 on the basis of MMK converter production preparation facilities operating since 1993. In 2014, a factory dedicated to processing the metal slag from the ore mining and processing integrated plant. The main tasks of Shlakservice include the reception, processing and discharge of metal slag; production of granulated slag-forming mixtures as well as servicing (repair of refractory masonry and running equipment) of special mobile mixers.
