MMK to invest RUB 5.5 bln in environmental activities in 2018

In his presentation, Mr Yurchenko outlined MMK’s environmental practice. Since 2004, MMK has had an environmental management system in place. In 2016 this system was successfully certified to ISO 14001 standards by Germany’s TÜV NORD CERT .

In 2017, MMK invested more than RUB 4 bln in environmental activities. Key projects over the past year included reconstruction of sulphur-capture systems at the sinter plant, reconstruction of the gas-cleaning unit at the double-hearth furnace in the electric arc furnace facility, and construction of casting-bed aspiration systems at blast-furnaces Nos. 9 and 10.

Reclamation of disused land and reducing the environmental impact of industrial waste are also important environmental activities. Last year, as part of a programme aimed at re-cultivating the Western quarry of Magnitnaya mountain, MMK planted 2.5 ths trees and bushes across an area of 20 thousand square metres. Also in 2017, MMK processed 5.6 million tonnes of slag and carried out an urban landscaping environmental initiative, which has continued into 2018.

MMK carries out initiatives to suppress dust from unorganized emission sources. In 2018, it plans to continue using dust suppression systems at two wagon dumps and outdoor storages of sinter burden preparation department.

As part of a programme aimed at improving air monitoring system in Magnitogorsk, MMK increased the number of stationary and mobile control stations. It is implementing a project to create an automated system for controlling industrial emissions and build an environmental dispatching centre to enable continuous monitoring of emissions.

2018 programme includes activities aimed at implementing the Clean City strategic initiative, such as reconstruction of aspiration systems at blast-furnaces Nos. 1 and 2, completion of technical stage of re-cultivating the Western quarry of Magnitnaya mountain, building environmental facilities for a sinter plant currently under construction. In total, MMK plans to invest approx. RUB 5.5 bln into environmental activities in 2018 (up 37.5% year-on-year), which bring the investment in 2014-2018 to more than RUB 15.5 bln.
