MMK starts to modernise its section rolling mills
The value of the contract for the supply of technical documentation, equipment, installation supervision services, and operational training amounts to EUR 5.5 mln. The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
The project provides for the modernisation of the cooling roller conveyer by replacing each line of existing fans with sixteen new ones. They will be equipped with temperature and bearing vibration sensors, motors with inverters as well as motors attached directly to the impeller shaft. After modernisation, the heat irradiance of the conveyer for the cooling of the wire rod will amount to more than 200 W/m2, and the air consumption for the fans on the roller conveyer will increase to 125 Nm³/h. The total additional installed power will amount to around 4,500 kW for both lines.
The modernisation will allow the air cooling line to produce end products whose properties correspond to global and Russian standards for high carbon steel. The refurbishment of the mill will serve to increase the content of sorbitized perlite in the microstructure of the rolled high-carbon steel, to improve the mechanical properties of the metal, to reduce the unevenness of the microstructure, the unevenness of time resistance, and will ensure the production of rolled metal from high-carbon steel (0.45-0.85% carbon) with a diameter from 5.5 mm to 16 mm with a maximum speed of 90 m/s and the maximum productivity of the mill of up to 130 tonnes per hour. Moreover, the modernisation of the mill will allow for the reduction in downtime associated with repair and servicing of equipment.
Fine wire mill 170 was commissioned in 2006. With its launch at MMK, a radical refurbishment of the rolling mills was completed, thanks to which MMK received the most modern equipment for the production of long rolled products with a total capacity of up to 2 million tonnes per year. The unit was supplied by the Italian company Danieli. Mill 170 has a capacity of up to 765,000 tonnes per year and is intended for the production of wire rods with a diameter of 5.5-22 mm, as well as reinforcement bars with diameters from 8 to 16 mm. One of the main customers of the mill's products is MMK Group's subsidiary, the metalware and calibration plant MMK-METIZ.
MMK is one of the world's largest steel producers and a leading Russian metals company. The company's operations in Russia include a large steel-producing complex encompassing the entire production chain, from the preparation of iron ore to downstream processing of rolled steel. MMK turns out a broad range of steel products with a predominant share of high-value-added products. In 2016, the company produced 12.5 million tonnes of crude steel and 11.6 million tonnes of commercial steel products. MMK Group had sales in 2016 of USD 5,630 million and EBITDA of USD 1,956 million.
