Launch of new sinter plant recognised as Event of the Year

The awards ceremony for the prize-winners took place in Moscow as part of the formal reception to open the leading exhibition of the steel industry, Metal-Expo 2019. The winners were presented with a certificate and a trophy, sculpted into the shape of a steel worker.

The most modern sintering plant in Russia - MMK's No. 5 was commissioned in July 2019. The launch ceremony was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The new sinter plant has a capacity of up to 5.5 million tonnes of sinter per year and equipped with 19 high-efficient environment-protection units. "This project will significantly reduce the plant's impact on the environment," said Victor Rashnikov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MMK, "Commissioning of the new sinter plant will also ensure a significant increase in environmental safety. This is part of MMK's large-scale investment strategy, in which the plant radically renews all production of the first stage of processing."

The commissioning of the new sinter plant made it possible to decommission the outdated equipment at sinter plant No.4. As a result, it is possible to achieve a twofold reduction in dust emissions (by 2,100 tonnes per year), a fourfold reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions (by 3,500 tonnes per year) and a sixteen-fold reduction in benzapyrene emissions; In addition, MMK achieved a reduction in discharges of pollutants into the water circulating supply system by 600 tonnes per year and a reduction in waste at the slurry deposit No.2 of the sintering plant by 13,750 tonnes per year.

The competition for the Main Event in the Russian Steel Industry was established in 2011 by the organising committee of Metal-Expo, with the aim of supporting and promoting innovative projects in the metallurgic industry. Every year it celebrates the most important projects implemented with a total investment value of more than EUR 100 million. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works has won the competition 3 times already. In 2011 and 2012 MMK was awarded for constructing and putting into operation two stages of a modern cold-rolling mill (mill 2000) in plant No 11, in 2017 - for launching continuous hot-dip galvanising unit No 3.
