MMK launches new turbine unit at its power plant

The turbine unit T 42'50-2.9 was produced at the Ural Turbine Works. The generator for it was made by specialists at ELSIB, the Novosibirsk Scientific Research and Production Association. The electric output of the turbogenerator is 50 MW. The turbine is made in one cylinder and equipped with the latest automatic control system designed to operate in optimal conditions while reducing energy costs. In particular, the specific heat consumption for the production of one kilowatt of electricity will be reduced by about 15%. This will allow MMK to reduce its natural gas consumption.

The new medium pressure turbine is one of a kind. When it was created, completely new technologies were used, and many elements installed on the unit were previously used only on turbines of greater power and high pressure: in particular, shut-off and control valves combined in one unit. For the first time, elements of control and protection made in a single unit are being used on a turbine installed at MMK's Central Power Plant.

As part of the replacement of the turbine, unique technical solutions were used: the unit was installed in the operating engine room on the site of the old turbine No.6, next to the operating equipment. The projects were adjusted taking into consideration the existing conditions and the feasibility of safe operation of the equipment. The builders installed 280 tonnes of steel structures for various purposes and laid more than four kilometres of pipeline and 230 km of cables for the control and automation systems. In addition, a new transformer substation was installed which will take 110 kV of voltage from this turbine and issue it directly to the network.

Today, the CPP's main power equipment consists of eight power generators, two hot water boilers and nine turbogenerators with a total capacity of 216 MW. The launch and operation of the new unit increased the capacity of the station by 25 MW. In addition, the economic performance of the unit will contribute to an increased use of the electricity produced at the Central Power Plant.

In addition to increasing power generation, the introduction of the turbine unit will increase the reliability of heat output for heating and hot water supply of the city of Magnitogorsk. MMK's CPP provides heat energy to a part of the industrial site of the plant and the Leninsky district of the city, and also gives steam, chemically purified water and condensate to the shops of the plant.

The service life of a new turbine is at least 40 years.
