MMK’s two legendary MMK mills produce 50 mln tonnes of rolled products
The MMK mills were already in use at the time of the World War II and originally produced steel for armour on the front lines. Every second Soviet tank in those years was made from Magnitogorsk metal.
Before the war, rolling mill 4500 was located at the Illich Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol. In early August 1941, when the front came close to Mariupol, the mill was dismantled at the decision of the State Defensive Committee, and together with the people working at the mill, evacuated to Magnitogorsk. Already by November 1, 1941 the first armour plate was rolled at the mill, and in December of the same year MMK sent 60 ths tonnes of tank armour metal to the front.
Rolling mill 2350 for thick-plate steel was evacuated to Magnitogorsk from Zaporozhye. At that time, it was the best sheet mill in the country with a design capacity of 280 ths tonnes. It also was mounted as quickly as possible, and on July 1, 1942 issued its first sheet of steel.
Mills 4500 and 2350 are still in service and make a significant contribution to MMK's production success. In 2018, they produced 164 ths tonnes and 226 ths tonnes of hot rolled products respectively. Today, they produce sheet metal with a thickness of 6 to 160mm, designed for shipbuilding, bridge construction, engineering, pipe enterprises and other industries. A well-established system of maintenance and repairs allows for the extended life span of the units and helps these veteran mill to remain in demand.
