MMK presents the Attraction project to Magnitogorsk residents
A project to transform urban space which is unique on a national scale is due to be implemented on land belonging to Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK). The multifunctional park space covers 400 hectares. The presentation of the 'Attraction' project took place on the land where the future development will be built. Project Manager Maxim Yasko and Director of the 'Attraction' project Ruslan Novitsky told the audience about the history of the project, the functional features of the future facilities, construction plans and new opportunities for development.
According to Maxim Yasko, a project team was established at the end of 2017, which consists of specialists of the plant, of MMK Group organisations, of the city administration and of Magnitogorsk State Technical University.
In 2018, the project members conducted scientific research, urban planning surveys, market research and surveys of residents. In 2019, on the basis of a marketing and urban planning concept, a number of environmental studies were carried out - including on the foundations and soil. In April 2019, a competition was held to choose the project designer, the winner of which was the German company Obermayer Consulting. In July, one of the three options proposed by the designers of the project's master plan was approved.
The project is aimed at creating a comfortable urban environment of a qualitatively new level in Magnitogorsk. At the first stage of the project, on an area of more than 220 hectares, the core of the future development will be created, where modern sports, medical, educational and cultural facilities will be concentrated, where residents and visitors of the town will be able to relax, play sports and receive quality medical care. On the site, there are plans to create a museum and educational complex, a sports cluster, a multidisciplinary medical centre and a landscaped park, through which a 'ring of activity' will pass, there are also plans for an artificial lake which will cover a 15-hectare area.
An important part of the project will be a landscaped pedestrian boulevard, which will run along the east side of the development area and along which the main features of the project will be located.
Speaking about the implementation of the megaproject, Chairman of the Board of the Directors of MMK Victor Rashnikov noted: "This will be an urban space of a completely new level. When implementing the project, we are focusing on best practices not only in Russia, but in the world. It will be a unique space on a nationwide scale, which is integrated into the urban space. We believe that the people of Magnitogorsk deserve to live in a fitting urban environment, to have all the opportunities for recreation, physical education and sports, and the possibility to lead a healthy lifestyle. The project should be implemented in full to become a real place of attraction - both for Magnitogorsk residents and for visitors of the city."
Currently, design work is underway. In the near future, the designer will present draft proposals for the protection of the main buildings of the project. The site is already being prepared for geological surveys. Construction work will begin in the spring of 2020. The plan is for the first objects to be commissioned in 2022 on the Day of Metallurgists: among these objects will be a significant part of the park, the boulevard and the 50m indoor pool and fitness centre. It is planned for the core of the project to be completed by 2025. At the end of the presentation, a tour of the area of the future multifunctional park was organised for everyone. During the tour, there was a lively dialogue with residents of the city who asked questions, made suggestions and offered their services in the implementation of the project. The project was met not only positively, but also with sincere wishes for its speedy implementation.
