MMK and Tatarstan strengthen cooperation

The representative delegation of the Republic of Tatarstan began their trip with a visit to the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) production site. The guests visited the blast furnace No. 1, the unique complex of the thick-sheet rolling Mill 5000 and the newest complex for cold-rolling, located in the sheet-rolling workshop No. 11. The Head of the Republic of Tatarstan gave high praise of MMK’s modern industrial complex.

Rustam Minnikhanov noted that “Magnitogorsk Steel and Iron Works is a key partner of many Tatar businesses, such as KAMAZ, Almetyevsk Pipe Plant, Ford Sollers and others.”

Later a meeting took place in the Magnitogorsk House of Friendship of Peoples with representatives of the Tatar community of the Southern Urals. Also in attendance were President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnihanov, Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region Boris Dubrovsky, Chairman of PJSC MMK Victor Rashnikov, MMK CEO Pavel Shilyaev and Mayor of Magnitogorsk Sergey Berdnikov. Topical issues such as inter-ethnic cooperation, the development of social and economic relations between the regions and the participation of the Tatar community in the social, cultural and economic life of Magnitogorsk were discussed at the meeting.

Rustam Minnikhanov noted that there are currently more than 20,000 Tatars living in Magnitogorsk and more than 180,000 in the Chelyabinsk Region. Among them are many well-known metallurgists, scientists and cultural figures who have contributed to the development of the region. MMK Chairman Victor Rashnikov also stressed the importance of inter-ethnic dialogue, as well as the significance and diversity of economic relations between Magnitogorsk and industrial enterprise in the Republic of Tatarstan.

Magnitogorsk and Tatarstan are connected by a close long-term partnership. Tatarstan is one of the leading consumers of MMK’s steel products and this partnership continues to develop. In May 2018, a joint project between MMK and Coşkunöz Alabuga opened MMK-Coşkunöz-Alabuga a metal services centre in the SEZ ‘Alabuga’ in the Republic of Tatarstan. This steel services centre has the capacity to produce 60,000 tonnes per year of steel billets used in the creation of car components. This ensures a full production cycle for Russian automakers and foreign automakers based in Russia particularly in the Volga and Ural regions.
