MMK has tonnes to celebrate in 2017
In February 2017, hot rolling mill 2500 at plant No. 4 reached 180 million tonnes of hot rolled steel produced since the unit was commissioned in 1960. Today, this rolling mill – one of the largest at MMK – is under reconstruction, scheduled for completion in 2020. After the heating furnaces, both the stands’ roughing and finishing groups will be reconstructed. As a result, the production capacity of the mill will increase from 3.6 to 5 million tonnes per year. In addition, MMK plans to build a new cross-cutting machine No. 1. These changes will allow MMK to expand its range of metal products towards a thin and thick strip with an increase in their consumer properties, including the production of high-strength and tubular grades.
In May 2017, 30 million tonnes of product were produced at mill 2350. This unit, manufactured by Uralmash in 1935, was evacuated to Magnitogorsk from the Zaporizhstal plant during the Second World War. In the summer of 1942, it was commissioned by Magnitogorsk. During the war years, it produced defence products: armour for armoured cars and front-line attack planes. Mill 2350 currently produces sheet for bridge-building, machine-building, and other industries. Among the companies that use its products are factories producing petrochemical equipment, gas and oil refineries, and Russian pipe- and car-building companies.
Thick plate mill 5000, which was commissioned in July 2009, produced its 8-millionth tonne of hot rolled steel last May.
As of July 2017, cold rolling mill 2000 in plant No. 11 had produced 9 million tonnes of rolled steel since being commissioned by MMK.
In August 2017, the continuous hot dip galvanizing units No. 1 and No. 2, which produce coated metal, had produced 9 million tonnes of galvanized steel since the start-up of the units.
Finally, MMK’s largest production achievement in the last year was the production of the plant’s 800-millionth ton of steel since the first open-hearth furnace was commissioned in 1933.
