MMK Long Products Mill Produces 10 Mln Tonnes of Rolled Products
In August, Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works’ (MMK) Medium-section Mill 450 reached a milestone of 10 mln tonnes of hot steel produced since the beginning of operation.
As part of a large-scale equipment upgrade project, between 2005 and 2006 three modern, fully automated mills from the Italian manufacturer Danieli with a combined capacity of over two mln tonnes of long products per year replaced older units at MMK’s long products mill workshop.
The new Medium-section Mill 450 was one of the first to begin operating in July 2005. It was built on the former site of Mill 300 No.3. 2,700 tonnes of equipment were installed with a minimal outlay on the renovation of the building itself.
Mill 450 has a maximum capacity of 790 thousand tonnes of long products per year and is designed to roll angles, channels, round bars, strips, hexagons and other products that are required by industries, including construction, as well as in the manufacture of steel structures. As with the other modern Long Product Mills at Magnitogorsk, this mill is notable for its high productivity and capability to produce a wide range of rolled products in terms of type and size. It is also economical and efficient due to the automated manufacturing process.
During its operation, in addition to standard profiles like angles and channels, Mill 450 has successfully produced many new products, including those for the automotive and machine-tool industries. The workshop specialists have particularly mastered production of spring strips for the MAZ and GAZ automobile plants, for the Beloretsk Spring Plant, as well as the production of tracks for agricultural machinery by the Chelyabinsk Tractor and the Cheboksary Aggregate Plants. In a short time, they launched a new production of a special channel for electric locomotives, special products used to strap gondola cars for UralVagonZavod, and blades for earthmoving vehicles and round steel. 450 Mill now produces over 100 different profiles from several dozen grades of steel.
