MMK Further Automates Control over Product Shipping

PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) has launched an automated Product Loading Control System (PLCS) at two of its major rolling mill shops.

The joint development by MMK-Informservice (part of MMK Group) and KonsOM SKS, an automation solutions provider, forms part of the plant’s unified freight control system which nearly eliminates the risk of customer complaints due to the delivery of incorrect goods.

Every metal coil produced at rolling mills No. 4 and 10 has a QR-code, which the system reads online as the train passes through, recognising the wagon number and determining whether it has been loaded correctly. The system processes the information automatically and, if any discrepancies are discovered, sends an email to specialists at the mill. All data about the products shipped, including photographs of every hot-rolled coil, is stored within the PLCS.

The system has already been integrated with those already operating at MMK, including the Wagon Availability Control System, which has been modernised and equipped with new sensors. These measures have improved the effectiveness of MMK’s integrated automated control system, with no customer complaints due to the delivery of incorrect goods registered in recent months. Rolling mill No. 10 has almost doubled its OTIF performance to 78% (On-Time-In-Full is the target to deliver at least 70% of orders to customers within three days of the scheduled delivery window).

Timely deliveries are one of the key objectives set by the Company’s “Focus on Customers” strategic initiative. MMK CEO Pavel Shilyaev commented: “MMK plans to achieve a world-leading on-time delivery rate, while significantly increasing its customer focus and strengthening its position as the best supplier to Russia’s leading metal-consuming industries.”
