MMK Group plans to double production of mill rolls
Magnitogorsk Rolling Mill Plant (part of MMK Group) has begun building a steel rolls shop as part of an investment project worth approximately RUB 12 billion.
The aim of the investment is to create a high-performance manufacturing facility to make products for the purposes of import substitution, including support steel rolls for hot-rolling mills and work rolls for MMK’s hot-rolling mill 5000.
The facility will increase the plant’s output of finished products from 17 thousand to 33 thousand tonnes per year and, in the future, will meet around 70% of the needs of the Russian market. The new shop will also create 141 jobs.
Magnitogorsk Rolling Mill Plant currently supplies MMK with work rolls for hot-rolling mills, with the exception of its hot-rolling mill 5000. With the opening of the new shop, the plant will also be able to produce work rolls for the latter unit while also fully meeting the Company’s needs for support steel rolls for hot-rolling mills (except for the mill 5000), which it did not manufacture previously.
A unique technology for the production of support rolls is being developed in cooperation with Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University.
The new shop is being built at MMK Industrial Park, which will enable the Company to take advantage of income- and property-tax benefits. The project’s chief designer, Magnitogorsk Gipromez, has already developed the key technical solutions for the main workshop building and infrastructure. As part of the site preparation works, the building of steel-wire shop No. 2 was demolished. The general contractor, Prokatmontazh, has begun working on the main building of the steel rolls shop and modernising the administration building.
The project is supported by the Industrial Development Fund, the government of the Chelyabinsk region and MMK.
The first phase of the project is expected to launch in 2025, and the project is scheduled for completion the following year.
